I was spending a summer up in Edinburgh after a year playing the fiddle at Chetham’s in Manchester. I’d never been into electronic music or had even heard any, really, but a school friend of mine took me to a very loud electro club. I’ve no idea who the DJ was but I went in with an open mind and had the time of my life! This was the antithesis of what I’d spent my life listening to and playing. It was so loud and so powerful and all these robotic rhythms… All the people were dancing togther and there was a really great atmosphere there. That summer and the next in Edinburgh I listened to a lot more and as I was attempting to compose at that time I asked my friend, Chris, if we could do something on his synthesizer box. He showed me the basics, quite a lot to get my head around, and off I went. I tried to renounce my training and re-create those rhythms and simple melodies that seemed so powerful in the nightclub. After lots of mistakes and deleting things by mistake I managed to ‘write’ this piece (with a fair bit of help, it must be said!). It’s my only foray into electronic music and I’m still proud of it! I hope it measures up a little bit at least to all the other tracks that are going to be on this compilation and maybe it will sound a little bit different? Thanks to the guys who are making this compilation. I look forward to hearing it!
